NORTHBROOK AREA RUG PET STAIN REMOVAL

area rug pet stain removal
There is nothing better than arriving home after a long day at work or running errands and have that cute furry face waiting to greet you with a wagging tail. Pets are more than just pets they are members of the family, and like any other member of the family, they can get sick or scared. The difference is when pets become sick or scared they can’t always get outside so they may end up having an accident in the house. If this accident happens on your expensive rug, it is important to clean it up as soon as possible to avoid any odors or stains. Not only do pet stains ruin the aesthetic of your beautiful rug, but they can also literally ruin your rug.

Area Rug Pet Stain Removal In Northbrook, IL

Pet urine, for example, contains urea and when urine dries, the area turns into tiny crystals that become attached to the rug fibers. When the carpet becomes moist (commonly due to high humidity levels) the urea crystals activate, and bacteria will begin feasting on them which causes the rug to smell and become damaged. In addition to the foul smell created by the activated urea, moths are attracted to urine and will begin feeding on your expensive rug. Moths usually begin feasting on the back of the rug so you may not notice until they have already done significant damage to the rug creating costly repairs, so it is important to remove pet urine stains immediately and properly. If a pet has an accident on your expensive rug it is important to follow the steps below:

Remove Solid Waste
 - If the pet accident involves solid waste such as vomit or fecal matter, it is important to remove it immediately before it has time to soak into the rug fibers.

Absorbent Towel and Warm Water - The best and safest way to remove pet stains including vomit and urine is to take a clean absorbent cloth (white if possible so you can clean it with bleach after treating the rug) and dip it in warm water and gently blot the area where the pet stain is to absorb as much of the stain as possible. It is important just to blot or dab the area, do not rub as this will force the stain further into the carpet fibers making it harder to clean. Keep using this method and switch towels if the one you are using becomes too dirty until you have removed as much of the stain as possible.

White Vinegar - If plain warm water is not completely removing the stain, you can add a couple of tablespoons of white vinegar to fresh warm water and use a new clean absorbent towel and being blotting or dabbing the area. Although white vinegar is acidic, it is also mild, colorless, and gentle on various fabrics and fibers. When warm water alone does not clean up a pet stain, the acidic nature of white vinegar can help to neutralize pet stains and odors and clean any pet stain that remains.

DO NOT DO ANY OF THE FOLLOWING - If plain warm water or warm water with white vinegar does not completely clean up the pet stain it is important never to use the following cleansers or methods: Bleach, Ammonia, Salt, High-Alkaline Detergent, Steam, and Scrub.

Expensive rugs are made from natural materials and cannot be cleaned using the same methods as less-expensive rugs made from artificial fibers. Harsh chemicals can not only ruin the color of the rug, but they can also destroy the rug fibers themselves. If your rug is hand-knotted then scrubbing or steaming can cause the dyes in the rug fibers to run into other parts of the rug and can cause the knots to come apart ruining your expensive rug.

When in doubt about what you should do, call a professional. Expensive handmade rugs can last for decades if they are cared for properly. If you are unsure if you have completely removed a pet stain using warm water or warm water and vinegar mixture it is best to call in an expert. The professionals at Northbrook Oriental Rug Pros have been cleaning expensive rugs for 30 years and will come to your home for a free consultation and estimate.
